In addition to still mourning my two little ones, Shar gave me her really bad cold. So neither of us enjoyed Thanksgiving at the Ranch with my Sister and Thanksgiving Friday with Shar's family. So we go to the doctor, get a few med scripts, and take them to Walgreens to be filled. With a couple of hours to spare and the weather being in the 50's tonight, I figure I can handle shooting a few of the very beautiful displays already up early this season. I shoot my first house and then it rains. Of course it does. Well I still have a few weeks before Xmas...

My Heart is Broken
When we first started dating, my now wife would sing me a song every time we did karaoke; To Sir With Love by LuLu.

On our first Valentine's Day, she gave me my first dog. After several weeks of racking our minds for a name, we came up with ToSir With Love or ToSir for short. He really enjoyed hearing me sing it to him while we danced around the bed when he was younger. Now in his older days, he was blind and deaf, but always managed to somehow find me for a good scratch and a few licks. And although he could not go up and down the steps any longer, he was never a burden to carry out to do his business that he refused to do in the house, And still enjoyed a daily swim in the pool with me all Summer, gently laying paws on my arms as I guided him through the waters.
Today, ToSir crawled behind our couch, curled up and passed away. We found him there after searching the whole house for over an hour trying to find him. There he lay, looking as peaceful as when he slept. ToSir was my first pet. He was my best friend. And I am devastated by his passing, only a week and a day after our little Angel went to heaven.
My heart is broken and will never mend.
In Memoriam
Although Angel was born in 1997, he only came to live with us in the Summer of 2001. His early life was very hard. His original owner developed Alzheimer's and possibly abused him. And when she could no longer care for herself, he was passed around to each of her children who considered him a troubled dog and not a good fit for any of their families. Despite having two poms of our own, they pleaded for us to take him in or they would be forced to take him to a shelter. So we decided our hearts had just a little more room for one more.
He came to us with many reported problems, including problems nipping at people, food allergies, tooth problems, small dog syndrome, etc. Turns out the people had been feeding him canned puppy food. Once we put him on adult dry his digestive problems vanished immediately. After several expensive surgeries, we managed to salvage most of his teeth. With a dominant female already in the house, he quickly lost the small dog syndrome. And the nipping, well he was just trying to stand his ground. What others thought was him trying to bite people, was just his way of asking for attention. He played with al the children in our family including our young grandchildren who petted and tugged at his fur and never once bit nor nipped them. The worst case scenario was that they got a good bath from his licks of love.
It took almost two years, but he finally integrated into a happy, healthy member of our family. I miss having him jump up and down with so much excitement when we come home. I miss scratching him while I watch TV on the recliner. I miss hearing his snores when he slept in one of his secret places in the bedroom or living room. Or seeing his joyful glee when one of the kids came and he treated them like his own personal human. He had so much love in such a small ball of fur. And we both miss him so much, but are eternally grateful for all the love and joy he gave back to each of us.

South Mountain Reservation
Before he delegated design of the Essex Parks to his stepson's firm, Frederick Law Olmsted visited the newly acquired reservation. He regarded it as some of the most beautiful and promising terrain he had ever seen. The design of South Mountain was finalized by the Olmsted Brothers in stages over the years. A good deal of construction work--trails, foot bridges, shelters, etc.—was carried out by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the 1930's.

Basalt lava flows in this rift valley (Newark Basin, Piedmont). Look for turtle backs, which were formed when the basaltic traprock fractured into small hexagonal blocks. Minerals filled in the cracks, then erosion wore away the basalt faster than the minerals. The resulting pattern was rock similar to the back of a turtle.
West Branch of the Rahway River heads south through the park flowing through Orange Reservoir, Campbells Pond and Diamond Mill Pond.
